Global Positioning
System refers to a series of satellites developed and
launched by the US Department Of Defense for military
purposes. A recreational GPS receiver can use these
satellites to determine its current position anywhere on
Earth. Recreational GPS systems can provide relatively
accurate information about latitude, longitude, UTM
coordinates, and direct of travel.
Newly published
editions of the Atlas now includes tick marks along the
margins of each map page, displaying latitude and
longitude at either 1-minute or 10-minute intervals.
Lines extend through the maps at either 15-minute or
1-degree intervals to form a grid and are labeled in
both conventional and decimal form. The tick marks and
grid lines represent the World Geodetic System (WGS84)
datum.
